No person not being an officer or servant of the Burial Authority or another person
so authorised by or on behalf of the Burial Authority shall enter or remain in a
cemetery at any hour when it is closed.
It is an offence under the Local Authorities Cemetery Order 1977 to wilfully create
any disturbance, commit any nuisance, wilfully interfere with any burial taking
place in a cemetery or to wilfully interfere with any grave or vault, any tombstone
or other memorial, or any flowers or plants on any such matter; or play at any
game or sport in a cemetery.

History
The 4-acre cemetery was formed in 1857 and contains monuments to James Gillingham,
inventor of artificial limbs who died in 1924, and John Stringfellow, inventor of the first
engine-driven aeroplane.

Chard Town Council took over the sole responsibility for the Cemetery on 1st April 1992, it
having previously been run jointly with Tatworth and Forton Parish Council. Since that time
the Council continues to maintain Chard Cemetery and is able to offer the following services:

Memorial Garden
There is a memorial garden, opposite the main entrance, where arrangements can be made
for a commemorative rose planted or bench to be donated.

Chapel
The Chapel is situated within the Cemetery grounds and was built in 1858, for Thomas
Brown to the designs of James Mountford Allen. This can be hired for funeral and memorial
services.

Book of Remembrance
The leather-bound book is kept inside the Chapel, displayed in a protective case. Entries can
form a lasting memorial to a loved one or to remember someone interred elsewhere, with a
page dedicated to each day of the year.

Memorials
All memorials to be erected in accordance with British Register of Accredited Memorial
Masons Safety Standards.
Fees to erect or place a memorial on a grave in respect of which the Right of Burial has
been granted are as follows;

Stonemasons are asked to notify the Cemetery or Office prior to removing/installing a
memorial. This will ensure that the visit will not clash with an interment and enable the
Cemetery staff to mark the correct plot.
The above dimensions are the maximum allowed. Any queries should be addressed to the

The Owner of the Deed of Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial must give written permission for
a memorial to be erected or any change to an existing memorial.
All memorials must be approved by Chard Town Council before they are commissioned.

Interments
Chard Town Council’s Cemetery at Zembard Lane offer facilities for both burial and ashes
interments.

After 5 years, with 45 years burial rights remaining, they can be extended by 5 years to

Deed of Grant of Exclusive Right of Burial
Administration charge for dealing with a transfer of ownership

Burial Rights may be purchased where available in advance, at the time of arranging an
interment or after an interment has taken place.
Whilst the ownership of the land remains with Chard Town Council, the exclusive Right
of Burial may be purchased so that no body shall be buried, or cremated remains
interred or scattered, in or over any grave for the duration of the Deed of Grant of
Exclusive Right of Burial unless by written permission of the owner of the Rights.
The exclusive Rights of Burial also allow a memorial application to be made by the owner
of the Rights.
It is possible that there may be previous or future interments of non-family members
where Burial Rights are not in existence. Remains will not be disturbed when preparing
for a new interment.
