Annual Town Criers Competition
Chard Town Crier, Stuart Cumming hosted the third annual Town Criers competition on Saturday
28th June 2025.
A total of 14 Town Criers attended, including an entry from as far as Australia.
The competition was run under the rules of The Ancient and Honourable Guild of Town Criers,
which comprises more than 170 official Town Criers from the UK and overseas.
The format of the competition was as follows;
Round 1 – Hometown Cry
Round 2 – British Traditions

Chard’s best cry for 2025 was awarded to Mark Wylie from Calne.
Stuart Cumming, Chard’s Town Crier comments on the competition:
“Wow, what can I say the town crier competition here in Chard was magnificent! I have so many
people to thank for helping make the day so special and run seamlessly. In no particular order, The
High Sheriff of Somerset and all of our fantabulous judges, the Amenities Team, Tim Bickham. The
Mayor and Chard Town Council, Chard Town Team, Girl Guiding Chard, my wonderful wife and
consort Viv, my sister Karin, the two photographers Brian Rendell and Lee Mitchell, businesses of
Holyrood Street particularly Bath House, Village Bakery and Communitea Waffle House, Claire's
Country Kitchen and Garry the Guildhall caretaker.”
