On Saturday 28th March Chard will be bursting with community arts activities.
Arts organisation Terrestrial, known for creating playful projects with community groups across Somerset, are hosting a day of free events at Great Mead and Chard Guildhall.
In the morning (10.30-12.00), families can join in with forest play at Great Mead (the area of green space behind Holyrood Academy) and take part in a storytelling performance in the woods.
The event shifts to Chard Guildhall from midday. Terrestrial are providing a free hot lunch, plus hot drinks and snacks throughout the afternoon.
The Guildhall will be full of creative activities for people to explore – from giant cardboard crafting to placard painting. There will be fun tasks for adults as well as children of all ages.
At 2.30pm Terrestrial will ‘premiere’ a short dance film made by students from Holyrood Academy working with visiting professional artists.
At 3.00pm a new mascot for Chard will be unveiled, created by artist Megan Clark-Bagnall along with volunteer groups from Chard Community Hub, Forefront, Communitea Waffle House and Chard Library. Visitors can add their own ideas to the ‘pockets’ of the mascot and then follow it on a walk up to Chard Museum where it will live.
Terrestrial’s Director Tom Spencer says, “We love working in Chard. There are brilliant people doing great things for their community every day. This event is a fun way to bring lots of different projects together and offer a whole bunch of free, wild arts activities at the same time. Whether you’re 8 or 80 we’re confident there will be something you’ll enjoy getting stuck into.”
“We are particularly excited to share the two big projects we’ve been working on over the last couple of months. We’ve been supporting a group of 14-year-olds at Holyrood to create their own dance film – so much youthful energy squeezed into just a few minutes of professional footage. And we can’t wait to see how the people of Chard respond to the new mascot that has been co-created with local community groups. We hope it will have a long life at future events.”
All activities are free to join (donations welcome on the day). More information at www.terrestrial.org.uk
