On Saturday 22nd November the beginning of the festive season was marked in grand style, as residents and visitors gathered for the annual Christmas Lights Switch-On. Despite earlier unsettled weather, the rain cleared just in time, allowing the event to proceed with its full programme of activities and entertainment.
From mid-morning onward, Chard Town Centre was filled with a welcoming atmosphere as families arrived to enjoy a wide variety of festive attractions. The Guildhall hosted a Santas Grotto, where children had the opportunity to meet Father Christmas, and a well-attended craft fair featuring local artisans and makers offering unique gifts, seasonal decorations, and handcrafted wares.

On the build up to the switch on crowds were treated to impressive performances from two of the town’s highly regarded majorette groups: Silver Star Elite Majorettes and Evolution Majorettes. Their routines brought colour, precision, and energy to Fore Street, drawing enthusiastic applause and contributing significantly to the festive ambiance that characterised the event.
Visitors were also able to enjoy a range of refreshments from the food vendors stationed throughout the town centre, offering hot food, sweet treats, and warm seasonal drinks. Their presence contributed greatly to the festive atmosphere and provided much-appreciated comfort on a cool November evening.
As dusk approached, anticipation grew among attendees awaiting the lighting ceremony. The formal switch-on took place at 7:30pm, led by the Mayor of Chard accompanied by the Chard Carnival Royalty. Their joint countdown was met with excitement from the hundreds gathered, and the moment the lights illuminated the town centre was greeted with cheers and applause. The display, comprising traditional motifs and some modern features, brought a warm, seasonal glow to the high street and marked the official start of Chard’s Christmas celebrations.

Following the event, Chard Town Council Chief Executive and Town Clerk, David Bell expressed gratitude to the community for coming together to make this happen:
“This year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On was a testament to the spirit and resilience of our community. We extend heartfelt thanks to our performers, traders, food vendors, and everyone who came to be in and support the event.”
The event was organised by Chard Town Team, supported by local businesses, community groups, and volunteers whose contributions were vital to the smooth running of the day’s activities.
We hope residents and visitors to the town alike are enjoying this years lights in the build up to Christmas. See below some of the highlights.
